Chitra Singh (born Shome) is an Indian ghazal singer. She with her husband Jagjit Singh pulled the ghazal genre out of the drawing-room of the elite and brought it to the masses. Respectfully known as the “king and queen of the Ghazal world,” the husband and wife duo created some of the most successful Indian music of the 1970s and ’80s.
Chitra Singh’s career as a playback singer began in the early 1970s, but her real breakthrough came when she collaborated with her husband, the legendary ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh. Their combination of classical music with contemporary sensibilities helped bring ghazals into the mainstream.
Chitra and Jagjit Singh were not only husband and wife but also a musical duo who revolutionized ghazal music in India. They often performed together and created some of the most memorable ghazals in the Indian music industry.
