Raj Ghuman is a Punjabi-Canadian folk singer, media personality, and cultural advocate based in Toronto, Canada.
Born and raised in Jandiala Guru, District Amritsar, India, she developed a passion for music early in life, influenced by her father, Jarnail Singh Kang, a Forest Officer with a deep appreciation for music.
She pursued formal education in music, obtaining a Master of Music degree from Guru Nanak Dev University in 1981.
After immigrating to Canada in 1983, Raj Ghuman continued to nurture her musical talents. In 1993, she performed publicly in Canada for the first time at a cultural event organized by Sanvaad Magazine.
She founded the Fulkari Sangeet Group in 1998, aiming to preserve and promote traditional Punjabi folk music, especially during wedding ceremonies.
Raj has released several albums, including “Rabb Diyan Rakhan,” “Bichhua,” and “Lohri Geet,” featuring popular tracks like “Massan Leya” and “Girls Lohri Tappe.”
In addition to her singing career, Raj Ghuman has made significant contributions to Punjabi-Canadian broadcasting. She is the founder of Fulkari Radio in Toronto, airing on CJMR 1320 AM, and has been active in the media industry for over 25 years.
Her efforts have been instrumental in bridging cultural gaps and promoting Punjabi heritage within the Canadian diaspora.
